Applications of Laser Marking Machines and Welding Machines in the Jewelry Industry

In 2019, the sales volume of jewelry in China reached approximately 1 trillion yuan (official statistics showed around 650 billion yuan). The average number of jewelry pieces owned per person has increased from 1 piece a decade ago to more than 5 pieces, with some individuals owning dozens of pieces. This fully reflects the rapid economic development and consumers’ growing affection for jewelry.

I. Current Status of the Jewelry Sales Market

Starting from 2003, China’s jewelry industry experienced a decade of rapid development until a slowdown in 2013. Around 2003, a county seat or shopping mall would only have a few jewelry stores, and the price of gold was just over 100 yuan per gram. By 2013, each county seat or shopping mall had at least 20 jewelry stores, and by 2019, this number had risen to no fewer than 30. Jewelry consumption has become a daily necessity, which is a testament to the rapid economic growth.

In 2020, the COVID-19 pandemic hit, forcing many jewelry enterprises and stores to close. They only gradually resumed operations in April. This meant that for nearly four months, these businesses bore costs such as rent, electricity bills, and bank interest without generating any profits. However, the bigger issue was that a significant number of people faced four to six months of unemployment or reduced income. It would take another six months for consumer spending power to gradually recover to 2019 levels.

During a recent research trip to frontline stores, I observed that besides gold purchases, consumer spending on other jewelry products was nearly negligible. Even gold sales primarily consisted of trade-ins for new items. Many jewelry store owners tried various sales strategies—including Douyin livestreaming, Taobao sales, rural outreach, street vending, and price reductions—but none achieved their desired results. On the contrary, jewelry maintenance services showed significant growth, presenting a new business opportunity and service model for the industry.

As high-value products cherished by consumers, everyone expects their jewelry to remain perfect. However, accidental damage often occurs during wear, such as broken chains, detached pendants, or lost gemstones. A once-perfect piece becomes flawed, causing considerable distress. Currently, not every jewelry store offers in-house maintenance services. Repair costs typically start at 30-50 yuan per item, with additional charges for replacing lost gemstones. If local repair services are unavailable, customers must pay a minimum of 60 yuan including shipping fees, and the repair cycle can be lengthy. These factors inevitably create consumer dissatisfaction during the sales process.

With technological advancements, jewelry maintenance equipment has undergone significant transformation—evolving from manual repair to semi-mechanical processes, and now to high-tech solutions. The emergence of laser marking machines and welding machines has revolutionized jewelry repair, restoring damaged pieces to their original condition while enabling the addition of customized cultural symbolism to jewelry items.

Additionally, while jewelry stores have adopted numerous promotional tools, many have exhausted conventional strategies, leading to a state of stagnation. This situation often stems from store owners’ limited cross-industry exposure. Laser marking machines are emerging as a powerful tool to drive further development in the jewelry sector.

II. Applications of Laser Marking Machines in Jewelry

Jewelry laser marking machines are advanced technological products that have emerged in recent years. They directly address the needs of printing brand logos and customized text on jewelry items. Equipped with high-performance laser systems and professional operating software, these machines can precisely engrave text and designs onto the surface of various jewelry materials, including precious metals and gemstones. Particularly in retail settings, this technology enables stores to offer personalized services such as engraving birthday wishes or wedding blessings, creating long-lasting sentimental value that enhances customer emotional connection and effectively boosts jewelry sales.

During an interview with Mr. Wang, Marketing Director of Tianzheng Technology, he noted that laser marking not only delivers clear, permanent engravings without damaging the product but also offers high efficiency and versatility. It can be applied in various scenarios, including promotional campaigns and customized gift offerings.

Market research revealed that some jewelry store owners have introduced value-added services for wedding clients by engraving personalized messages like “May [Couple's Names] Grow Old Together” on wedding-related items such as liquor bottles, beverage cans, and cigarette packs. These customized products add an elegant touch to wedding venues and convey heartfelt blessings, making them extremely popular among couples.

III. Applications of Laser Welding Machines in Jewelry

For a long time, the jewelry industry primarily relied on argon arc welding for repairs. However, this method often results in large weld points that leave uneven surfaces. Many stores were forced to send items to Shenzhen for professional repairs, with turnaround times ranging from 20 days to two months. These lengthy waiting periods frequently led to customer disputes, leaving store owners frustrated due to their lack of in-house repair capabilities.

During discussions with Mr. Xing, Technical Director of Tianzheng Technology, he emphasized that laser welding machines offer significant advantages: they are easy to learn, enable fast repairs, and produce smooth, seamless welds that effectively resolve most issues associated with traditional welding methods. The company provides comprehensive training support—including on-site instruction and video tutorials—ensuring customers can master operation within a single morning.

In conversations with jewelry store customers, many expressed dissatisfaction with unsightly, uneven repair joints on necklaces, which made them hesitant to wear once-beloved pieces despite reluctance to discard them. Mr. Xing explained that Tianzheng’s jewelry laser welding machines integrate German engineering with advanced domestic laser technology. Featuring small laser spots, user-friendly operation, and surface damage-free processing, these machines require no consumables and eliminate the health risks posed by harmful welding materials used in traditional repair methods.

IV. Development Trends for Jewelry Stores

In today’s fast-paced era, businesses risk falling behind without constant adaptation. While product quality and design remain essential, service quality becomes a critical differentiator—especially amid widespread product homogenization. Looking ahead, jewelry stores are expected to evolve into models similar to automotive 4S shops, offering not just product sales but comprehensive maintenance and care services. These after-sales services are poised to become a new profit growth engine for jewelry retailers.

As technology continues to advance and society progresses, we can anticipate more innovative high-tech products that will enhance the beauty and functionality of jewelry, enriching our daily lives.
